1. What is sterling silver?

Silver (also referred to as fine silver) is 99.9% pure silver. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% copper added. This is done because silver on its own is too soft to hold its shape very well and will bend and scratch easily. The small amount of copper added is enough to make the silver stronger and a lot more durable but not nearly enough change the colour of the metal or turn your skin green, so don’t worry!

2. Is Audrey’s jewellery plated or “solid” sterling silver through and through?

If by “solid” you mean not a cheaper metal like nickel or brass coated in sterling silver then yes, it is made from “solid” sterling silver except where resin, gemstones or other materials have been added for colour.

3. What does the number 925 stamped on the jewellery mean?

This is the hallmark indicating the item is made from sterling silver.

4. What does the other mark mean?

This is the Makers Mark. It identifies the designer and/or maker of the jewellery. This Makers Mark belongs to Audrey’s designer Karen P Thompson. It is her initials in the Greek alphabet.

5. I’ve had an allergic reaction to jewellery before, will this happen if I wear Audrey Says Hello! jewellery?

It’s unlikely. The reason you had a reaction was probably due to the nickel content of the jewellery. Audrey’s jewellery contains no nickel. A nickel allergy shows itself as an itchy red rash when it comes in contact with the skin.

6. Silver makes my skin turn black! Why does this happen and how do I stop it?

Silver can cause a black skin discolouration and some people seem to be more susceptible than others. It probably won’t cause any physical harm even though it doesn’t look so hot! Sterling silver naturally turns black over time when it comes in contact with air (that’s tarnish). The chemicals in your skin can make this happen much faster than usual especially when the weather’s hot.

If you are experiencing this problem use a silver polishing cloth to wipe the inside of the ring band or bracelet before wearing it each time. By doing this over time you will find that the discolouration will eventually ease.

7. Is there some way to stop silver from tarnishing so quickly?

Yes. Silver tarnishes quicker when it’s exposed to the air so when you’re not wearing it store in a cloth bag (the one your Audrey Says Hello! jewellery arrived in is good) in a drawer or somewhere away from moisture.

8. What are the “dont's” about silver?
  • Don’t wear your silver jewellery swimming, bathing, showering, cooking or doing the dishes!
  • Don’t use abrasive polishes, scrubbing tools, steel wool or scourers etc while wearing silver jewellery and don’t use these items to clean your jewellery – use a silver polishing cloth instead. One will be included with your purchase.
